As far as NM's eastern flank goes, there are a few hidden jewels in northeast NM and southeast NM. But east central NM is chock full o' fail.

I should clarify...Fort Sumner was a cool day trip. No way you can spend more than an afternoon there. But when you've paid for three nights at a Roswell hotel, and you've already seen the stuffed alien dummies at the UFO museum, it's kind of an adventure to wander up the back roads and check out Billy the Kid's grave. I drove up, spent a few hours there, and drove back to Roswell.

Other than maybe Carlsbad Caverns, that's how you have to spend a vacation in Eastern NM. Take a series of day trips. Two or three days at the Caverns, maybe a day at White Sands, a day in Roswell and a day at Fort Sumner. Any one of those, individually, would be instant fail as a standalone destination. As a whole, to this day it's one of the best vacations I've ever taken.

Roswell's best feature is being one hour east of the mountains.

The art museum is surprisingly good. Never went to the UFO museum.

    Ah. THAT, I can see.

It isn't a bad place to kill an afternoon. And I hope you wandered over to Ruidoso, which is only an hour west of Roswell and full of beauty -- not to mention the awesome Inn of the Mountain Gods golf course and casino.
