The guy who covers horses for them is leaving the business.

Terrible job because, yes, you get to cover the ponies at Saratoga but you get run down because your turf columnist is a HS English teacher, nobody else on staff knows a horse has 3 or 4 legs and the layout is pathetic. Plus, the pay sucks and you'll probably spend the last two weeks of the racing meet making phone calls to football coaches from the press box because there aren't enough bodies to go around.

If you're a young writer, AVOID at all costs.
If you're a writer, period, AVOID at all costs.

But you do get to cover the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup because the chain uses their stories.

Just out of curiosity, would said writer be covering the Saratoga cross country teams? Or is this all horses?

And they're probably looking at an out-of-towner. Unlike the other papers around there, they almost never hire locally. Probably because people would rather go work in Amsterdam or Hudson than Saratoga -- hard as that is to believe.

I'd love to go up there and cover the cross country team. Horses, not so much.

I'm Canadian and starting in the business.

Saratoga Springs is pretty close from Montreal so I will apply.

I do know they pay their copy editors barely $10/hour.

I would imagine this position starts under $20k, but that's just a hunch.

The position starts out around $24K.
