The Cullman Times is seeking a sports writer to cover a competitive beat
of 13 high schools and one junior college. Our writers also cover
multiple Alabama and Auburn home games, as well as national
championships, throughout the college football season. Our next hire
should be skilled in writing gamers on deadline, as well as features.
The ability to design appealing pages is also preferred. Email resumes
and writing samples to David Palmer, editor, at dpalmer@cullmantimes.com.

Wonder what happened here. I applied for this back in the spring and never heard anything back.

This is one of the worst places for a journalist to end up. It has nothing to do with the town, but rather with management.

The pay is around $22k and you have to take a furlough every once in a while because they don't have enough money. Your "desk" is a glorified card table with a computer that runs Quark.

If I were you, I would look elsewhere for a job.

Make sure to refer to the Editor as "Monkey" during your interview.

    He will appreciate it. Honest.

I've already found a job, thankfully. Glad these people never got back to me.

I wonder if they ever filled this job. Just curious.

In the last week? At least twice...

  8. To be fair, some fine journalists have worked in Cullman as a sports editor through years, including Lance Griffin, Scott Turner, Creg Stephenson and Justin Graves. I'm not saying this job is Sports Writing Nirvana, but it has been used a stepping stone/stopover for some capable and hard-working journalists through the years.

And hell, never hurts to have an editor who can bust a long punt return for a touchdown at crunch time.

From inside sources, the recent hire didn't last too long. Pitched a tantrum about not getting to cover something and left. Just what I hear.

what could she possibly have wanted to cover in cullman that would have made that person quit?
