The Saratogian, an award-winning daily newspaper in upstate New York, has an immediate opening for a full-time sports reporter/paginator. The position includes a mix of covering high school, college and community sports, paginating the daily sports section as well as assisting as both a writer and designer on enterprise packages. Candidates with a strong knowledge of horse racing are preferred, as we provide extensive coverage of Saratoga Race Course, which is the home to the top thoroughbred meet in the country each summer. The Saratogian’s sports section was honored as a Top 10 daily section in 2008 by the national Associated Press Sports Editors. Familiarity with Quark and Photoshop a plus. Send resume, 3-5 writing samples and any design clips, and three references to sports editor Brien Bouyea at The Saratogian, 20 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., 12286, or e-mail bbouyea@saratogian.com. No phone calls, please

I know a pretty good amount about this gig. I used to work here. It is a JRC shop, but Brien and the rest of the group are really good people, and Saratoga is a pretty cool place. Despite the JRC attachment, it's a really good job.

What range of pay should be expected?
Separate question: What range of pay is livable in the area?

Money needs to be right. It's one of the more expensive small communities in upstate New York. Price of everthing goes up during tourist season.

The ciruclation at the Saratogian has taken a huge hit since JRC took over. They closed the Independent, a nearby paper in Columbia County and it's a highly competitive market with the Times Union, Daily Gazette and now the Post Star all competing for readers. It's a cool town, but an iffy gig with a company that is chopping. Just be careful.
