    Company: Midland Reporter-Telegram
    Position: Wanted: Ace sports writer
    Location: Midland, Texas
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Negotiable
    Ad Expires: August 25, 2008
    Job ID: 953423
    Website: http://mywesttexas.com

    Description:
The Midland (Texas) Reporter-Telegram, a Hearst Corp. Newspaper (20,000 daily, 25,000 Sunday) in West Texas, is seeking a sports reporter for our award winning sports section.

We are looking for someone who can provide some fresh ideas to our staff to help enhance a quality section. Even though this is primarily a writing position, some design and copy editing is required as we do everything here.

Our focus is on high school sports, especially football, but the Permian Basin’s sports scene is complemented by a Double-A baseball team, minor league hockey, indoor football, a yearly Nationwide Tour golf event, a very active local golf scene and the possibility of a semi-pro soccer franchise. We also provide limited coverage of Texas Tech University sports.

Candidates should have a strong knowledge of AP Style, while experience with Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Freehand is preferred.

Experience is a plus but recent college graduates will be considered. We plan to fill this position quickly because of the fast approaching football season.

Please send resume, clips and layouts to: Len Hayward, Sports Editor P.O. Box 1650 Midland, TX 79701 hayward@mrt.com

For more information: Len Hayward, Sports Editor (432) 687-8846 hayward@mrt.com

Len Hayward is good people. This is a good paper, with good pay for its size and some really good high school football.

So in the past few months, there have been openings at El Paso, Lubbock, Odessa, Midland and Abilene. You'd think nobody wants to live in West Texas or something.

Would this be to replace the guy who left in the spring or did someone else jump?

They already replaced Jack Merriam with a desk guy from Illinois.

This opening is replacing Mitch Worthington, who is going back to Idaho. I believe he is doing something with the SID office at Idaho State.

Anyone know what beat would be involved with this position?

Pretty sure it would be a backup beat as far as high school football and the main writer for the Double-A Midland RockHounds.

Odessa JC hoops was always fun to cover when they came to NMMI. Good program.

West Texas has such a bad rep, even other Texans make fun of it.

Fuck 'em. Except for the Permian Hellhole, we have the mildest summers in the state out here. And that's a pretty significant consideration.

It's still west texas. Also a pretty significant consideration.

Are you suggesting that featureless vistas, the stench of petroleum and cowshit, ugly towns and ravaged ecosystems are not evocative of heaven itself?
