    Description:
The Woodstock Independent is seeking a sports reporter to join our award-winning weekly newspaper in Woodstock, Ill., about 50 miles northwest of Chicago.

We're looking for someone with a passion for prep sports; who is comfortable working in print, web and social media; who wants to take on a variety of assignments, from gameday coverage to feature stories; and who's dedicated to embracing — and advancing — the future of local, independent journalism.

Ideal candidates will have experience writing articles on tight deadlines, generating their own story ideas and writing in an accurate and engaging way that connects with readers. They will be bright, hard-working journalists with a good understanding of a wide variety of sports. They will be able to handle basic video and photography assignments as required.

Candidates should have a background working, freelancing or interning for a daily, weekly or monthly publication or website. Recent graduates with exceptional clips are encouraged to apply.

Please note: Although this is primarily a sportswriting position, this employee also will be responsible for a variety of basic newsroom tasks, including writing briefs and other similar materials.

An ability to speak Spanish is a plus. An ability to meet deadlines, follow AP style and write clearly is a must, as is a drivers license, transportation and car insurance.

The Independent offers health insurance to full-time employees after 90 days of service and the option to contribute to an IRA after one calendar year.

This position will open in late February 2015. To apply, send a resume and at least five writing clips to katelyn@thewoodstockindependent.com.

The Woodstock Independent is an independently owned weekly that covers Woodstock, Wonder Lake and Bull Valley, Ill. Established in 1987, The Independent is published by Inde Enterprises Inc. It is a member of the Illinois Press Association, the National Newspaper Association and the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.
