Job opportunity at local paper, a subsidiary of BH Media Group, Inc. - Sports reporter

The Winston-Salem Journal is looking for a sports reporter who knows how to find a good story and who knows how to tell it. The winning candidate will join the Journal's team covering the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the main emphasis on athletics at Wake Forest University. But that's not all this job covers. This is a great part of the world for sports writers, with a farm team for the Chicago White Sox in town and a legendary venue for short track racing that doubles as a football field for Winston-Salem State University. Proven deadline writing skills are required, as is the ability to grow an online audience using social media and produce multimedia elements to transform the routine into the outstanding.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Five years experience writing for a daily newspaper or online news organization. 2. Write compelling and timely stories about Wake Forest athletics and its role among the college athletics programs in the nation’s top tier. Stories must be written for the continual deadline of online use, for daily print editions and for long-term projects. 3. Generate realistic photo and graphics assignments to aid online and print design. 4. Independently shoot and edit video using a mobile device, or work with the Journal’s multimedia departments to produce more polished video presentations. 5. Collaborate with other college beat reporters at the Journal and within relevant BH Media Group sites. 6. Establish an extensive network of sources to avoid reliance upon official messaging from college media relations departments. 7. Undertake any project or story as assigned by their supervisor. 8. Onsite regular, reliable attendance is required. Please forward examples of your work to: Andy Morrissey Managing editor Winston-Salem Journal 418 N. Marshall St. Winston-Salem, NC 27101 amorrissey@wsjournal.com
