The Journal-Courier in Jacksonville, Ill., is filling a rare opening in our sports department. We are looking for a reporter who loves sports, can produce copy with flair under the pressure of deadline, has an eye for features and can develop sources and cover a beat. The right person will be attuned to new technology, and experience in new media (blogging, multimedia) is a plus. We are located in an area rich in sports and have two colleges in town.

Send resume, cover letter and samples (URLs of multimedia examples acceptable). Send materials to Editor David C.L. Bauer, Journal-Courier, 235 W. State St., Jacksonville, IL 62650 or e-mail them to David at dbauer@myjournalcourier.com.

Define "not very." Are we talking a staff of two or three or a one man sports department that is writing, taking photos, editing and laying out pages?

I drank one night with the Jacksonville staffers back in like 2003 or 2004. They were good folks.

Yes, it's a small paper. Office is in a cool old building on the town square, I think. There's a hole-in-the-wall bar right down the street where some of them got me hammered on their dime.

It is (or was, as of 2008) a Freedom paper. Believe at that time their staff was in the 3-5 range.
