    Chillicothe Gazette Media has an immediate opening for a full time Sports Reporter who will produce sports content for the news/information center. A Sports Reporter is tasked with producing routine daily print and online content primarily concerning sports, athletes and related issues and, as needed, general news. Work must be accurate and completed according to set deadlines. This process may involve collecting basic information, interviewing individuals, writing breaking, in-depth, feature, and project stories and contributing to video reports. The position requires use of social media and new technologies to quickly share sports news and game events online. It will include the acquisition or development of data (sports statistics) to be entered with software for publication with stories and online. Stories will need to be completed under tight time restraints and for specific target audiences. Works to ensure Gannett programs such as Information Center, Real Life, Real News, mainstreaming/diversity and defending the First Amendment are reflected in the company’s products.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Gather news through attending sporting events, interviews, research, data and other resources, to write stories for all platforms ensuring department’s success in initiatives and goals that include immediate online reporting of breaking news, Real Life/Real News (creating content meaningful to readers lives) mainstreaming/diversity and reaching targeted audiences. This may include general news assignments or shifts.
    Use sports knowledge to develop assigned beat by communicating with sources, identifying sources and developing expertise on local teams and athletes.
    Use online social media, blogs and online technology to communicate with readers in ways beyond traditional print and digital products.
    Enter high school sports data from game box scores into company stats Web site.
    Assign photographs or other visual elements while working with editors and other staffers to plan visual presentation of completed work.
    Daily communication of coverage planning with editor by maintaining a news budget list of current and upcoming stories.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    College Degree required
    Journalism Major preferred
    Sports reporting preferred
    Typing, computer experience including Word, Excel, and general knowledge of database computer programs. Telephone skills. Internet research capabilities.
    Knowledge of sports, including game rules, strategies and statistics.
    Excellent grammar and spelling abilities, accuracy, attention to detail, customer/client relations, organization and time management, problem solving, communication.
    Valid Ohio drivers license required, meet minimum state insurance requirements.
