AIM Media Texas is seeking a passionate sports reporter to be part of a six-member regional team covering athletics in Cameron County for The Brownsville Herald and Valley Morning Star - both are daily newspapers in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, possess effective writing and reporting skills, is well-organized and has excellent communication skills. This position will be responsible for covering high school sports, including game coverage, photographs, features and statistics.

The candidate also should be able to cultivate solid relationships with coaches and other sources. The candidate will have skills with social media and post content to our websites. The position will be based out of Harlingen.

The Cameron County area loves its sports, mainly high school athletics, boxing and soccer. High school sports are covered extensively, and the staff contributes to the high school sports website RGVSports.com along with sister paper The Monitor in McAllen.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in related areas as well as knowledge of AP style and an ability to learn relevant software programs.

Photography and page design experience using InDesign also would be a positive, but we are willing to teach and coach the right candidate. Fluency in Spanish also is a plus, but not required.

The Rio Grande Valley is an exciting and growing area located just minutes from South Padre Island and Mexico. SpaceX has selected the area as the site of a new rocket launch pad. This area is rated annually as having the lowest cost of living in the country. And those living in other states should know, Texas has no state income taxes.

Email a cover letter, resume and three work samples to Sports Editor Bryan Read at bread@brownsvilleherald.com. Also, it can be sent via regular mail to 1310 S. Commerce, Harlingen, TX 78550.

AIM Media Texas is an Equal Opportunity employer. Non-U.S. citizens wishing to apply for a position must already be in possession of a valid work visa and other appropriate documentation.

Have an online friend who's a retired high school teacher in this area, but still operates the scoreboard at football and basketball games. Some towns literally straddle the U.S.-Mexico border. That's about all I got.
