Sports Illustrated: Carlos Beltran: Hall of Famer?

    This time, it's not me speculating. It's Sports Illustrated writer Albert Chen, in this week's magazine.

    The case he makes is a compelling one:

    * "One of eight players in major league history, and the only switch-hitter, with 300 homers and 300 stolen bases."
    * "A career .366/.485/.817 hitter in the postseason."
    * "Has a WAR above 60, which ranks him ninth alltime among centerfielders."
    * "His stolen-base success rate (87.0%) is No. 1 among players with 300 or more steals."

    My quick check at BR.com:

    * .283/.361/.498 career slash line.
    * .859 career OPS.
    * 122 career OPS-plus.
    * Rookie of the Year.
    * Best MVP finish: 4th.
    * Two top 10 MVP finishes.
    * Eight 100-RBI seasons (soon-to-be nine).
    * Seven 100-run seasons.
    * 2,018 career hits.
    * Seven All-Star Games.
    * Three Gold Gloves.
    * Has never led the league in a hitting category.
    * Batted .300 or better four times.

    Thoughts?

    He's got Adam Wainwright's vote.

    WTF is this all about?
    This guy won't get in without a ticket and I'm glad my SI subscription has run its course.

    Granted, this was in a little regional publication called Sports Illustrated, by an unknown writer named Albert Chen.

    If Sports Illustrated told you to jump off a cliff start a thread, would you do it?

    Maybe if Beltran could've stayed healthy, he would have merit. He was great at his peak. But he couldn't sustain it.

    If it's so bothersome to you, Mr. Crankypants, don't click on it then.

    It's not bothersome, it's just ridiculous.

    So ridiculous that it's ridiculous gravitational pull sucked me in, not unlike a black hole. Not unlike a so bad, it's good movie.

    It's going to take at least 3-4 more good (and healthy) seasons for him to have a shot. I don't think he gets in but overall he is a better player than some that are already in the Hall. It definitely doesn't help his cause that he was a mild disappointment in NY, on Mets teams that underachieved.

    On the topic of borderline HOFers, it looks like Johnny Damon has finally run out of steam. He's batting .226 and is 230 hits away from 3,000.
