The Henry County Local, a 3,500-weekly in central Kentucky is looking for a sports editor to join its close-knit team.

If you love high school sports, this is the place for you. We cover two school districts with one high school each. You will cover 10 teams in the fall, four teams in the winter and six teams in the spring. And in the in between times, there’s plenty of youth sports and feature opportunities to keep you hopping.

We need an energetic sports editor who can keep up with the hectic pace of the fall sports and not get bogged down in the summer doldrums, and still find the story behind the story. In addition to covering games and feature stories in stories and photographs, our sports editor must write a column and paginate the weekly sports pages, plus plan and produce sports special sections — all on a strict deadline schedule.

We’re looking for someone with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; and at least one year’s experience in newspapers is required.

The successful candidate should also have expertise with Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop; sports photography; and page design. Our sports editor must be an organized self-starter who can communicate with and assist the news staff and others as needed. As the Local’s sports editor, you serve as an ambassador from the paper within the community, and must be able to meet and work with the public on newspaper and community issues. The sports editor also is responsible for coordinating coverage of youth sports via community stringers. Equally important, you must be able to adapt quickly to change.

We’re a close, small staff with a serious love of laughter and food, but when it’s time, we roll up our sleeves and get down to business. Here, everyone chips in to produce a great weekly product. If you are interested in joining our team, please send your resume and work samples (writing, photos and page design) to:

    Jonna Spelbring Priester
    General Manager/Editor
    18 S. Penn Ave.
    Eminence, KY 40019

You may also submit your resume and work samples by e-mail to: editor@hclocal.com, subject: Sports Editor Position.

    No phone calls, please.
