The Valley News, a 14,500-circulation daily that covers the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont, is seeking a sports editor to oversee its five-person staff and supervise coverage, which includes high school and Dartmouth College sports, outdoor recreation, features and other sports-related news. The sports editor is primarily responsible for managing the staff, assigning stories, coordinating with the photo staff and editing copy, but also for some page production.
The Upper Valley is an economically vibrant and culturally rich region in rural New England that includes Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., and historic White River Junction, Vt. The Valley News remains a generously staffed newspaper committed to ambitious journalism. This is an ideal position for a person committed to leading a team of experienced and talented sports reporters in providing the coverage that will best serve our readers. The person we hire, who will replace an editor who has run the department for many years, will begin work around the end of the year and be working mostly at night.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume and salary requirements to Martin Frank, editor of the Valley News, at mfrank@vnews.com.

What happened to Don Mahler? Retire?

One of the last of a dying breed. You look at him and that hair and think "What a hippie stoner!" Furthest thing from the truth.

    Tremendous writer.

I was SE of the weekly across town, and won plenty of awards. But Don was The Guy in the Upper Valley.

One of the wonderful places in America to raise a family, with its mountains and rivers and lakes and farms and elite schools. And elite athletes to cover.

Based on what I've read, this sounds like a pretty good gig. Somebody should jump on this quick.
