    The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and co-ordinating all local sports coverage in a vibrant city of 155,000 people. Sudbury has a thriving sports scene, including a successful Ontario Hockey League franchise, 14 high schools, two community colleges and a growing university.

    Key responsibilities include:

    The Sports Editor is responsible for planning and often producing each day’s sports section. Daily duties include assigning stories to the sports writer, arranging photographs in co-ordination with the photography department, writing stories and features, developing contacts in the community, scheduling shifts in a two-person sports department and occasionally taking photographs.

    The Sports Editor or sports writer will lay out the sports section as needed. Excellent layout, copy editing and headline-writing skills are required, as well as knowledge of QuarkXPress. The Sports Editor is responsible for ensuring high-quality sports journalism that goes beyond game reports, including imaginative writing and creative approaches to stories.

    The candidate must have excellent communication skills within the newsroom and in the community. Developing and maintaining relationships with sports contacts in the community is a vital part of the position.

    The Sports Editor reports directly to the Managing Editor.
    This is a union position within the Northern Ontario Newspaper Guild.


    Qualifications:

    * The successful candidate will be a strong team leader and possess outstanding people skills. The candidate will have superior editing skills, be open to imaginative approaches to sports coverage and have a superior ability to manage time effectively and juggle many tasks in a busy department.
    * The successful candidate must be comfortable with technology and proficient in its use, including the use of QuarkXPress in a Macintosh environment.
    * The candidate must have a keen eye for layout and design, applying this knowledge and experience to provide outstanding pages under deadline pressure.
    * The successful candidate will demonstrate passion for sports who is creative and takes well-considered risks.
