The Monticello Herald Journal, a 5,000 distribution daily in northwest Indiana, is in need of a talented sports editor with reporting and design skills to head its sports coverage. The Herald Journal covers four area high schools as well as occasionally covering Purdue University sports in West Lafayette.

The Sports Editor will be relied on to be the primary writer, photographer and designer for the sports section, so previous experience with pro-style cameras, InDesign and Photoshop is preferred. What is more important is the passion to head the sports desk and own the coverage of local sports. You will require the skills to recruit and edit any freelance writers you can while maintaining a daily deadline. The area features some of the best spring sports team in Indiana, regularly seeing teams into the regional round of the playoffs, and the position requires someone who is willing to take the responsibility to work nights and weekends to cover these teams to the fullest extent.

The Sports Editor is also charged with planning and executing an annual banquet as well as distributing two scholarships to worthy local student-athletes. The position requires weekly profiles of successful senior athletes to run on A1, and each May the nominees are gathered to award the scholarships. This requires work with caterers, venue managers and scholarship sponsors.

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or a related field

Previous sports writing experience

Strong sports knowledge

Knowledge of AP style

Previous work in print journalism. College newspaper experience accepted

Preferred

1-3 years experience in print journalism. College graduates with strong examples of previous work are urged to apply.

Previous design experience using InDesign and Photoshop.

Previous photography experience.

Previous work in high school sports coverage as well as general news. The Herald Journal offers a chance to dive into print journalism, and with often require the Sports Editor to cover non-sports topics.

But those who the successful applicant doesn't give scholarships to would be losing out. SportsJournalists.com tradition would be preserved!
