Not quite sure what happened to hasten the SE's departure, but from what the pipeline tells me, it's overdue. This is the same SE who challenged a co-worker to a fight in the newsroom earlier this year.
On the other hand, the Advertiser is also a poster child for the category: Where can we float a trial balloon for every bad decision by Gannett?
Management makes a lot of bad decisions in operations of this place, such as
cutting summer interns before they start and slashing coverage in affulent areas close to home, but leaving in non-affluent ones further away.

    be very, very careful.

    A fight in the newsroom?

I'm curious as to why this is open.

Am guessing it's part of gannett's cutbacks in this round, but he didn't endear himself.

  4. It's a shame what Gannett has done to this newspaper. There are still a lot of good people working there, but they are increasingly dispirited, to say the least. I would recommend this job only to Gannett-heads who know what they're getting into.

You're absolutely correct. It could be, and should be, so much more than it is.

surprised they didn't just eliminate the SE position all together. After all, it is Gannett.

The Advertiser, for whatever reason, has never lived up to its billing as one of the state's better paper. There is a lot of potential there but the Gannett effect doesn't help. This one probably will go to someone in the chain but I think it needs someone who isn't a Gannettoid to straighten it out.

The problems with the Advertiser are far higher up the food chain than the SE. A new SE isn't going to straighten out anything; all they can hope to do is maintain and keep the staff from killing the clowns at the top.
Any potential change for the better will come only when the publisher, EE and ME are tossed out on their ass.
There are no assistant editors here, only "Team Leaders" which should tell you everything you need to know.
