The Independent Record, an award-winning 15,000-circulation daily in state capital Helena, Montana, seeks a dynamic sports editor with excellent leadership and organizational skills to lead a staff of six in this sports powerhouse city in the heart of the Northern Rockies.

The editor who lands this great job will inherit a staff that is loaded with talent, and will join a newsroom team committed to excellence in print and online. The editor who is lucky enough to guide this department also will assume a wealth of opportunity, with multiple high school state champions and also Carroll College, home to five of the past six NAIA football national championships and many other highly competitive teams at the national level. Helena also is home to high-level amateur hockey and minor league baseball.

The Independent Record, a member of Lee Enterprises, is a leader in news and sports innovation. This fast-paced newspaper needs a sports editor who can make an immediate contribution to achieving a high level of excellence in the printed and online products with compelling sports coverage, enterprising sports news, and multimedia presentation at helenair.com.

Candidates should have at least three to five years of newspaper experience, preferably a previous stint as an assistant sports editor or sports editor at a daily newspaper. The ability to craft eye-catching designs at least once per week via Quark Xpress is preferred, and covering some of the marquee sports beats as a writer and columnist are responsibilities of the job.

When you aren’t working, enjoy the myriad of incredible and accessible recreational opportunities Helena has to offer in hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, skiing, boating and many more.

Salary based on experience and expertise. Full benefits in accordance with Lee Enterprises afforded.

E-mail resume, cover letter, and design and/or writing samples to Editor John Doran at john.doran@lee.net or send to:

John Doran Editor Independent Record 317 Cruse Ave. P.O. Box 4249 Helena, MT 59601

Helena has a lower cost of living than most of the Western part of the state.

The town also shuts down at 5 p.m. Does have Carroll College, which is an NAIA football (and to a lesser extent basketball) power.

Wasn't this gig open just a while back? And any place whose main street is called Last Chance Gulch must be a little interesting.

It seems like something was open there recently, cause I remember posting about Carroll on this board.

It's Montana, so it's boringness is just compared to places such as Missoula, Whitefish and Butte ;)

Anyone else think that line was a little out there in terms of trying to sell themselves as a desirable destination?

Yea, seemed odd. Word is that one of the reporters has the Carroll College football beat, and the SE is expected to cover mostly high school sports and write columns...

Sacramento it ain't, but Helena's a nice little town.

Plus, Carroll's won the NAIA football championship 5 out of the last 6 years, and the high schools are usually some of the best in the state. Not sure what the staff size is, I'm guessing it's probably more understaffed than it used to. Lee newspapers are hurting, along with everyone else.

The staff features the SE, a reporter and a copy editor that are all FT. Then they have a PT guy that averages 35 hours/week, one that does 20, then I guess they are working on getting a PT guy for weekends. Still seems like a pretty good staff size given everything that is going on.
