Are you up for a challenge? The Ames Tribune has a rare opening for a sports editor, and whoever applies has big shoes to fill.

Our sports department leads the way in coverage of Iowa State athletics. We go beyond game coverage and tell the stories others won’t, and explore issues that affect Division I athletics. We delve into the human elements of the game, telling stories of the challenges players have overcome as the work to make their dreams come true.

The right candidate will supervise a three-person department, which covers Iowa State athletics in a growing, innovative, vibrant college town. He/she will coordinate coverage of ISU athletics, two high schools and oversee sports editors and writers at six of our weekly papers in central Iowa.

The right person will serve as a lead writer covering either ISU football or basketball, but also fill in as needed covering high school sports, and the stories about the people that make those programs tick.

Our reporters shoot video, and lots of it, are active on social media engaging readers daily, and host podcasts.

The Ames Tribune has a national reputation for being the go-to place for Iowa State athletics and we aim to only get better.

Compelling, colorful writing is required, as is the ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines; and build the relationships necessary to develop the sources you will need to be successful.

If you are up to the challenge, please submit resume, cover letter explaining what you would bring to the job; examples of your video work; and five writing samples to editor Michael Crumb at mcrumb@amestrib.com No phone calls please.

From the Steveu pipeline: Travis Hines is the new SE in Ames. Awfully fast announcement, which makes me wonder if this was already in the works. Still, solid credentials and nice move. Congratulations. :)
