This is the position George Schroeder vacated to join USA Today Sports Group. Great sports section with some great sports events and teams to write about.

(Clink the link above for the full posting)

    POSITION: Sports Columnist

    DEPARTMENT: Sports

    STATUS: Full-time

    SALARY SCALE: $1,125.30 – $1,239.70 per week

CLOSING DATE: Friday, September 28, 2012

The Register-Guard, a 60,000-circulation morning daily in Eugene, Ore., is seeking to hire a lead sports columnist to carry on a tradition of providing a strong voice to readers. This is a high-profile, high-impact job at a respected family owned newspaper in a wonderful community. We're looking for an independent, thick-skinned, self-starting sports columnist with backbone, integrity and heart; someone who can define our section by giving readers provocative critical opinions, analysis and human insight in the newspaper, supplemented by blog postings and social media. We're looking for someone with the news instincts, competitive nature and cynical streak of an investigative reporter, and someone who will be a team player on one of the hardest-working, most unified staffs in the country. Coverage focus is University of Oregon athletics; our top priority is coverage of local sports, including major track and field meets.

At least five years of sports-writing experience for a daily newspaper and graduation from a four-year college or university required; experience as a sports columnist strongly helpful, but so is the ability to provide expert, literate, informed opinions on sports.

Salary range is $1,1125.30 to 1,239.70 per week.

All employment offers are contingent on the results of a pre-employment drug screening.

Application deadline is Friday, September 28, 2012. Qualified applicants who are interested in joining a successful and respected organization should submit an application, letter, resume’ and non-returnable clips to rgjob.applications@registerguard.com or mail to: Sports Columnist, The Register-Guard, Human Resources Department, 3500 Chad Drive, Eugene, OR 97408

Applications are available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and at www.registerguard.com.

All applicants will receive a response. No telephone inquiries, please.

Re: Sports Columnist - Eugene, Ore.

I love the places that give the salary info up front... I really respect that.

Big shoes to fill, but this is a great job.

I am going to assume the weekly pay is $1,125 (not $11,125) - $1,239 per week.

    Like Mizzou said, good gig.

Seriously, not many better gigs in the country for a paper of this size.

For as much as our industry has taken a dive the last four years, this is a killer opportunity - and with a nice salary to boot. I'm still kicking myself a bit that I didn't go for the SE gig when it opened up a year or so ago, or whenever it was. Oh well, maybe someday.

Best of luck to all who apply.

That eliminates about 75 percent of the candidates from Lane County. Just kidding. Sort of.

Seriously, it's a good job at a good paper. George Schroeder hacked off some of the locals because he didn't always routinely genuflect to Oregon, and wasn't afraid to call them out for their pending NCAA violations, overspending, Kelly's routine rudeness with the local media, and other issues.
