At my last three stops, the press was off-site, so I haven't heard a functioning press in a long time.

    You've got mail.
Actually I heard it a few weeks ago because my mother still uses dial-up with AOL.

    - sound of a dot-matrix printer; everything is laser

    - sound of a cassette tape clicking off

    - sound of the dial on the television being turned; only remotes now

    - sound of kids playing in the front yard or on sidewalks; too dangerous

    - early video game "soundtracks" of the same tone looped over and over

    - really loud dishwashers

(excellent calll on the slap bracelets, nick)

Wrong-o. I hear the ice cream man at least 3x every week, and more in the summer. :) :D ;D

Great thread. My vote goes to old-fashioned cash registers and the cool whirring sounds they would make. Same with the old gas pumps that had the marbles in that little bubble on the side. Never really knew what they were for, but I was fascinated by those marbles bouncing around when I was a kid.

Oh, and authentic organ music at hockey games. One of the treats associated with watching an old game on ESPN Classic Canada.

I still get to hear the sound of a VCR rewinding or fast-forwarding because I don't have TiVO or DVR on my cable TV yet.

But to repeat sounds others have mentioned (and one or two that haven't been mentioned):
    - the sound of a dial-up modem
    - the sound of an audio cassette clicking off - or if the deck had auto-reverse - the sound of it switching sides
    - the initial scratchy sound the needle makes when it first hits the vinyl of a record
    - the click of the record falling from the holder onto the turntable
    - dot-matrix printer
    - the sound of an old Atari cartridge clicking into place
