So long, Lang

    For those in northern New England who knew him, Lang Metcalf, former boys basketball coach at Lebanon High (N.H.) died last night, complications of cancer. He was 73.

    Lang won 507 games and 2 state titles in 36 years.

    I was at his house Wednesday. He was near comatose, but opened his eyes when his wife Bev brought me into his room. I coulda swore I saw him smile. On his first date with Bev, he told her "So long" because "Good bye" was too final.

    So long, Lang.
