As I opened my first pack of Smarties (outside of Halloween) in probably three years, I am struck with the question, which do you prefer original M&Ms (no peanuts, almonds or anything) or Smarties (same deal). Essentially they are the same candy, but if I remember correctly their followings are as loyal as coke and Pepsi – actually i have no clue, I just made that up, which I figure is my right as it creeps up on midnight. So which do you prefer? For me, because they are currently satifying my sweet-tooth, I will have to say Smarties.

Smarties have milk chocolate in them? Since when?

The Smarties I know and love are flavored candy with no chocolate.

This is what I get for living so far away from the civilized portions of the universe. What are Smarties?

Isn't there a candy by the same name with no chocolate? Or am I confused?

Or they often come in a box similar to Reeses Pieces.

I know they have them in the UK, because a friend of mine brought some back from England, so I know they aren't just a Canadian thing. Maybe they are a Commenwealth thing?

I have no earthly idea why Smarties taste so much better than M&Ms. But they do. I stock up every time I'm in Canada.

I like 'em both. The only thing M&Ms have going on over Smarties is they don't melt in your hand. But Smarties has long had a cool advertising campaign in which we were always advised to "eat the red ones last."

I even remember the lyrics from the commercial from when I was a little kid:

When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly or crunch them very fast?
Eat that candy-coated chocolate, but tell me when I ask...
When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last?

And now I'm laughing at myself for being so frigging pathetic...... :D
