Greatest (as in influential) - not favorites. I think Grand Master Flash as the start of rap/hip hop - even though it sounds nothing like what he did. Patsy Cline in part because I wanted another woman on the list and another genre.

I have yet to see Fergie mentioned.

Favorite is much more fun than greatest/influential. Where's the fun in putting together the kind of list you would compile at work. Yawn.

Problem with doing one of favorites is there wouldn't be much diversity. I listen to classic rock, with occasional forays into blues and alt rock, to the exclusion of most everything else. Here's how a list of my 20 favorite artists would look:

    1. Grateful Dead
    2. The Who
    3. Rolling Stones
    4. The Beatles
    5. Neil Young
    6. The Doors
    7. Led Zeppelin
    8. Jimi Hendrix
    9. Allman Brothers Band
    10. REM
    11. Pink Floyd
    12. Bob Dylan
    13. Bruce Springsteen
    14. Stevie Ray Vaughan
    15. The Byrds
    16. Cream
    17. Little Feat
    18. Traffic
    19. Pearl Jam
    20. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Well, I have similar tastes, albert, but my list would look pretty different. Plus, you have posters who gravitate toward all kinds of music. I'm pretty sure I'd discover a number of bands if we went down the favorites road. The other road? Repetitive and boring. Like driving down 75 and seeing the same adult bookstore billboards for 8 straight hours.

YGTHRMEW wants to make sure there is no hip-hop in this.

Since it's 20 greatest, including all of the 20th century, all genres, and setting personal tastes aside, I'm going to have to sleep on it and compile a list sometime tomorrow.

Actually, dipshit, by doing lists of favorites, you'd get bands/artists across the musical spectrum. Much less diversity the other way.

Bob Marley? Dammit. I might have to revise my list.

    I don't think I could a rank a top 20 by favorites.
