    Anyone for some barbecued iguana?

Cool song ... college rock personified.

We're going to group a few of these "singleton" votes together ... bands that had one song nominated.

This trio is three classic songs from the 1960s:

No. 289: TELL HER NO -- The Zombies

No. 288: BUS STOP -- The Hollies

No. 287: THE BOXER -- Simon and Garfunkel

The clip I posted is audio from S&G playing the song on Saturday Night Live's first season, 1975.

I also recall Paul Simon playing the song on the first SNL after the Sept. 11 attacks. It was very moving. I decided then and there to learn it on guitar, and it's still one of my favorite songs to play.

No. 286: DOWN AND OUT IN THE BOLD NEW CITY OF THE SOUTH -- Astronautalis

Not my area of musical expertise, but here it is, performed live.

And now for something completely different ...

No. 285: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM by Yvonne Elliman

A ballad from "Jesus Christ Superstar" sung from Mary Magdalene's perspective.

My mom had this soundtrack on double LP, and once I was old enough to understand it, I always enjoyed giving it a listen. I guess you'd call my mom one of those "Vatican II" Catholics ... :)

Theology aside, a great song and helluva singer. Nice pick, shotglass!

OK, it's getting late ... even here in Pacific Daylight Time. Time to post one more "rock block" and call it a night.

    Here's some quasi-current songs SportsJournalists.comers nominated:

No. 284: NEED YOU NOW by Lady Antebellum
No. 283: FUCK YOU by Cee Lo Green (*-- see below)
No. 282: I KISSED A GIRL by Katy Perry
No. 281: COMFORTABLE by John Mayer
No. 280: 10 A.M. AUTOMATIC by The Black Keys
No. 279: ROOTS RADICAL by Rancid
No. 278: HEY YA by OutKast
No. 277: DIARY OF A SAN FRANCISCO SEXX STAR by Butch Walker
No. 276: THE SWEET ESCAPE by Gwen Stefani

I guess YouTube doesn't let you see "naughty" videos, such as "Fuck You" by Cee Lo Green or "I Kissed a Girl" unless you can prove you're 18. Rather than go through all that rigamorol, I just listed these song titles.

C'mon ... if you need proof I'm older than 18, just read this thread. Anybody who's staying up late raving about Fleetwood Mac and Yes songs is definitely over the hill!

And with that ... I'll pick this up again tomorrow.

Before we resume the countdown ... a correction:

    No. 277 should be ...

Diary of a SAN FERNANDO Sexx Star by Butch Walker

    Here's the YouTube link:

Yet another cool artist I have learned about through this countdown. Thanks, jlee!

No. 275: NUTBRUSH CITY LIMITS by Ike & Tina Turner

A vintage performance from back in the day:

No. 274: WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn

A great piano ballad from the early 1990s

No. 273: GOTTA GET AWAY by The Offspring

Shouldn't this song be a Southwest Airlines commercial? Actually, it's off "Smash" which was a pretty big (and pretty good) big-label debut for Dexter and Co. when it came out in 1994.

"Life is like a riddle and I'm really stoned ..." We've all been there, especially if we were young adults in the 1990s.

No. 272: SUMMER RAIN by JOHNNY RIVERS

Gotta like the still photos of Johnny performing with go-go dancers in the background. So 1960s ...

No. 271: TELEPHONE LINE by Electric Light Orchestra

ELO (and Jeff Lynne in various other bands) have had tons of great songs over the years. Including this one from 1976.

But it won't be long before this song title elicits one main response: "What's a telephone line?"

Blondie's "Waiting by the Telephone" faces a similar fate.

Re: SportsJournalists.com Memorial Day 300 rock songs COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY

No. 270: DIVORCE SONG by Liz Phair
No. 269: COWBOY SONG by Kid Rock

If only Kid Rock had talked Liz Phair into singing "Picture" with him ...

Actually, for all the flack Phair got for being a critic darling without real talent, she was (note the tense there) a helluva songwriter who had a lot to say about the mineland of relationships.

Kid Rock? Love him or hate him, he's had a helluva lot of fun with his 15 minutes years of fame. And the "Devil Without a Cause" album has some laugh-out-loud funny lyrics.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 268: SAN FRANCISCO GIRLS (RETURN OF THE NATIVE) -- Fever Tree

A lost gem from 1968. And speaking of heavy duty rrrrock from the late 1960s/early 1970s:

No. 267: MA -- Rare Earth
