There might be, Cap'n K ... we've probably got close to 500 nominees already. That's awesome.

Was poking around on google and found this blog talking about Memorial Day 500 classic rock countdowns.

This one is fairly typical ... the top 10 from WNEW's 1997 Top 500 list:

    10. Hotel California - The Eagles
    9. Light My Fire - The Doors
    8. Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
    7. Baba O'Riley - The Who
    6. Hey Jude - The Beatles
    5. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
    4. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
    3. Layla - Derek & The Dominos
    2. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
    1. Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Sure, these are all classic songs, but are they really the best by each of these bands? And was no decent music put out after the 1970s?

That's what we're trying to find out here.

Link to the WNEW list (and much more "Top 500" commentary): http://areuonsomething.com/top500.html

Keep those votes coming ... gracias.

I think you've got to guard against overthinking it in some cases.

Is the most popular song by a band the best song of a band? Many folks don't WANT it to be, because that eliminates the "discovery" on their part. But it usually is.

In other words, don't "fight" Led Zeppelin never rising above "Stairway To Heaven." Just accept its greatness.
