Did the Time Inc. lawyers who read this story have ties to Oklahoma, too? Because this one was vetted at supersenior levels, as it makes highly actionable charges if they're not true or at least sourced. I have to assume the publication stands by its work, no matter who reports for it.
Any opinion expressed by college football fans can be regarded as demented nonsense until proven otherwise.

I generally have a hard time trusting professional pop-off artists who criticize actual journos. Don't know Evans, but Dohrmann has done enough of these that I don't think he'd put his name on something that was suspect.

This is an excellent and timely reminder for anyone who would post something like this:

So Whitlock thinks the story is bunk? So how does he explain all the former players telling SI the same stories, is it a conspiracy or something?

Yeah, that was kind of a one-stop summary of the allegations against Evans regarding McFarland. Here's more:

He also used to write for Sooner Illustrated, which I guess is why Texas and Oklahoma State fans might be suspicious of his motives.

That sounds more like they're being prepared for a life in politics.

This story will inevitably spark cries of a hypocritical system and a defense of how the players should be paid, etc. But what of the academic fraud?

If this happens, there will be an entirely new football staff and possibly a new AD.

I wonder if the hostesses had an "incentive system" as well.

They shouldn't have to be students! Rah!

Spencer Hall -- great writer, often specious thinker -- compared the treatment of college athletes to the Brazilian government's treatment of slum-dwellers.
