Two hundred million dollars ... how far could that go?

Not very far. Newspapers are into cutting costs, not covering them.

It would help in the short-term but $200 million wouldn't help in any subsequent years.

The NYT has a substantial payment due on its debt in the next couple of quarters. This sale would help cover it.
