    He'd already been demoted. They were probably going to tell him he was being designated for assignment (just a guess). So if he'd just gone into the office, he'd be a.) a free agent with no additional baggage (and he already had suitcases) and b.) collecting his million-plus for this season with no need to rely on the union for its help.

    A dumbass of historic proportions.

  5. This just in - the Phillies have claimed Shawn Chacon. Reportedly his salary will be paid for by players who played under Ed Wade with outside contributions coming in from Curt Schilling and Scott Rolen.

    Chacon is mentioned in Feinstein's latest book for a run-in with Torre. Sent to Houston shortly thereafter.

    Yeah, well, I ran out of steam in the acknowledgments, which seemed to be a giant exercise in stroking his own ego.
