Actually, Ludmilla Turischeva, the top-ranked Soviet gymnast who was displaced (at least in public visibility if not performance) by Olga Korbut, was not bad looking, but Soviet women in that era tended to go for the factory-worker image as opposed to the Vogue cover-girl look.
