Seven fingers vs. one

A sentence I don't think I dare run in the paper, even though I'm quite fond of it:

Tommy Tuberville hopes to leave the field holding up seven fingers, while Alabama fans would be content if they can hold up one.

 

Win or lose, I have a feeling many Alabama fans would happily raise a one-finger salute toward Auburn.

 

Precisely ... why I probably won't print the above sentence.

What does the Tuberville seven fingers mean?

 

A couple years back, when Auburn beat Bama for the fourth-straight time, Tubs was seen wearing this shirt:



Now, since Auburn has won two more in a row, it hopes it can raise the seventh finger.
