A team name isn't oppression in most cases.

Then why are there certain words that cannot be said in public? We've effectively outlawed several, and with good reason.
Redskins should be one of them.
And if the Sioux object, that nickname should go.
Florida's Seminoles officially sanction FSU's use of the nickname. Why is another matter, especially given the pregame spear deal, but it is what it is.

Illinois should change their nickname anyway--Illini shows complete lack of imagination. Kind of along the lines of the University of Florida Floridians or the Oklahoma Oklahomans.

Take the opportunity and change the nickname now to something with a little more pizazz and leave any reference to a mostly forgotten Indian tribe behind.

Exactly. Naming the team after an Indian group is not on its face oppressive.

People from Illinois are not known as "Illini."

Understood, but I think the point I made still carries.

University of Illinois Fightin' Shitty Drivers doesn't have the same ring to it.

Would also require the state annexing Missourah.

Begs the question, are they shitty drivers who are fightin' someone, or are they those who are fightin' against shitty drivers?

If alumnus is the singular of alumni is Illinus the singular of Illini?

They are drivers who are simultaneously doing a poor job of fighting.

How about the Illnois Cubs? The Illinois Overtaxed? The Illinois Union? The Illinois Blagojeviches?
