If you saw that gawd-awful remake of Miami Vice, maybe you caught a few bars of an amazing remake of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" from the metal band Nonpoint. They do a fantastic job of being faithful to the original, keeps the original mood of the song, but injects just enough extra passion into it without going over the top. Very powerful

And no, there are no "cookie monster"-style vocals.

Recently heard a great version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Warren Zevon.

Nonpoint's pretty tight. I'd listen to their sophomore effort every day before my Senior Babe Ruth games to get myself pumped.

Also, it's been mentioned I'm sure, but "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley. The Buckley version helped me deal with 9/11 in a way I hope some people can understand.

7 Nights to Rock -- Nick Lowe, Springsteen live
Trapped -- Jimmy Cliff, Springsteen live
Viva Las Vegas -- Elvis, Springsteen live

  5. OK, maybe I missed it, but I can't believe this thread is this long without a mention of perhaps the three most divergent versions in rock history of one song:

"You Keep Me Hangin' On" by the Supremes, Vanilla Fudge and Kim Wilde.

    Great call, Lyman

I love the Vanilla Fudge version.

  7. I do, too, but I love 'em all. That should be a good psychological test, shouldn't it?

I don't like the Sympathy cover. Haven't head it for a while, but everytime I listen to I only think how much better the Stones version is...

Here are a few I don't I've seen on this list. I have some on my iTunes, most though, are covers this thread reminded me of:

Blue Monday – Orgy and New Order
Faith – George Michael and Limp Bizkit
Big Yellow Taxi – Joni Mitchell and Counting Crows
I shot the Sheriff – Bob Marley and Eric Clapton
I love rock and roll – Joan Jett and Britney Spears
Video Killed the Radio Star – Buggles and The Presidents of the U.S.A.

It's really good. There's tons of live Pearl Jam bootlegs online. I have a couple of concerts and about 50 or more songs downloaded. PM me and I'll shoot you a copy of I got you.

They also do a good Save it for Later by The English beat.
