God in heaven, guy was killed with his wife inside as he walking his three children -- 6, 8, 10 -- in the parking lot of the Salvation Army building.

Two black men either in their teens or early 20s shot him dead. Dead. This is the same town that had a Salvation Army kettle stolen, at gunpoint, in front of a Wal-Mart.

I don't want to get all personal, but I know the guy who was shot. He's jolly. Six-foot-three, 350, 400 pounds. Loved life. Loved his wife and kids. Loved working for the Salvation Army. Was just the best of dudes. I really liked him.

This was in my e-mail this evening:

It is going to be a shitty Christmas Day.

There's a special, really warm place waiting for those who did this.

And I would be happy to put both of them on the next express south.

While there's never a good time for things like this to occur, the timing and circumstances surrounding this aren't just sad, they're angering.

What kind of sick human beings really do this?

    Yeah, me too.

Growing up there, our family volunteered on Thanksgiving and/or Christmas day quite a bit at the Markham facility in LR. It's a hardscrabble neighborhood in a struggling city.

    That's terrible, terrible news.

They're not human. They're sub-human pieces of shit, and I hope they're treated accordingly when they're caught.

I really hate reading things like this.

Is whatever amount of money was in the kettles worth a human life? Or spending your life in jail?

Ugh. Wasteful, all the way around.

I can't even wrap my mind around that.

Jay, very sorry for your loss.

So sorry about this, and so sad for this man's family. I can't imagine what kind of people do this, what they must be thinking, or how they manage to live without compassion or decency and void of human emotion.
