7 years. Major beat, $30,000 New England. I think I just decided to quit. This is bullshit.

30K doesn't go very far in New England.

I always figured you made decent money at a bigger paper. Like writing for a top 10 paper or something. I heard columnists at places like that make good money and beat writers aren't too shabby.

My fiance is a nurse....she already makes more money than me and she's just an LPN.

That's not an absolute, either, although more believe it is than don't.

But there are situations where you look forward to going to work, even with its ups and downs. I still find that if I have any more than a week off, I'm itching to get back in the seat.

No offense, but I roll my eyes whenever I read the "why complain if you love what you are doing" theory. Just because you love something doesn't mean you should work terrible hours for low wages. Time is the most precious thing we have on this earth. We should be compensated fairly for what we give.

  7. Hmmm, what to think? I'm in the 21-25 range and it's interesting to see that nine are paid below $60,000 and nine paid above $60,000. Unfortunately, I'm not in the latter category.

Why the "why complain if you love what you are doing" theory is valid? A day with people who hate what they are doing would answer that question.

Unless I'm totally misunderstanding the statement, this is utter bullshit. I don't know where this took place, but my last semester of undergrad cost, like, $10,000. I made well more than twice that my first year as a pro. And I realize out-of-state tuition is pretty bad, but the average starting salary for a reporter is somewhere in the $25,000 range.

Again, I apologize if I've misunderstood something, but if this person went to a school that charges more than $25,000 per year and studied journalism, well, she deserves what's coming to her.

25K for an out-of-state education isn't much.... You have to factor in room and board and you're easily at 25K.

    Want the specific example?
    She went to USC.

    Expenses
    Tuition and fees: $35,810
    Room board: $10,858

Here's some reference material if you don't further believe me:

There were applicants from Northwestern and Columbia in the class, too. A couple from American University. Furthermore, she said "year" not "semester." Anyhow, thanks for calling "bullshit."
