I'm generally against replay because it is almost always awful in practice. It lengthens games with boring delays, it robs moments of their immediate excitement, it encourages officials to make bad calls on the assumption they can just look at it, and it doesn't really remove any controversy because people end up disagreeing over what they see most of the time anyway.

Every time a league implements a replay system, they swear theirs will be quick and only used for crucial, obvious plays in need of overturning and it won't turn into a miserable drag. But it always does.

    Randomly? Yes.
We need a nice, orderly release of the grizzly bears. Since it would help defenses, we need to allow receivers a chance to time their movements accordingly.

Baseball is the perfect example of this.

Randomly is a waste of a powerful incentive. Now, if they were released when replay takes more than 45 seconds...

I'd be interested to see how many minutes replay actually adds. My gut is the game length issue will never really be solved. The style of the game changed and the ads got more plentiful.

Part of the problem might be that the TV networks use it to throw in an extra commercial break or two, or to make up breaks. So instead of a 30- or 60-second review we get a 2 or 3 minute review.

A lot of it is the change in offenses. People bitched about the game length when Houston ran the Run 'n Shoot, and replay review was not in use then.

    Oh, that's clever!

Prefontaine certainly didn't die for this.
