You should take a long look at the idiots noting every banker/player/tie win at the
    baccarat tables.

The single worst gambling night I have ever had involved the single 0 wheel at the Monte Carlo. The wheel served that one 0 4 times in 6 spins and 6 in 15. I don't play zeroes - ouch. The overall advice here is correct - stay away from roulette unless you just feel like fooling around and not having to strategize at all. If you do play it, play it at the Vegas Hard Rock where the half-assed dealers will forget to even clear all the bets sometimes because they're staring at all the big fake racks on display walking around the small casino.

I sat next to a guy wearing a "You're with Me, Leather" t-shirt at the Treasure Island sportsbook two weeks ago.

I think Berman was out there then.

The Martingale system works every time -- as long as you have an infinite amount of money. It tells you that if you lose, just double your bet until you win it back. You'll eventually win. The problem is, the math becomes so high so fast, there's no way you can cover your losses, expecially since casino limits will hit you.

Say you start off betting $5. You lose. Bet $10 to win it back. Lose. Bet $20. Lose. Bet $40. Lose. Bet $80. Lose. Bet $160. Lose. Bet $320. Lose. Bet $640 -- ooops, except you can't because the table limit is probably $500.

But even if it wasn't, you bet $640 and lose. Now you have to bet $1,280 on your ninth bet. What happens if you lose four more times in a row? You're betting thousands, all just to win back that initial $5 you lost.

It's a common mistake to gamble with too small of a roll, but that's just crazy.

As far as the original point of you can't believe the wheel hitting 6 or 7 or 8 reds in a row ... when I go to Las Vegas for a weekend, I see that on the roulette displays twice an hour. Nothing unreal there. Playing poker online is bad enough. Roulette ... yow!

    Re: Gambling sucks

Tell that to Dr. J. He lost $100 bucks one night playing. On his last spin, I begged him to split 0/00.

    He didn't, it came up.

    Men. ::)

I once saw red hit 19 times in a row. No joke.

That said, if I play roulette, I often go with the streak, not against it. If you keep betting with it -- and still playing just the original bet (removing your winnings each roll) -- you often do pretty well.

Also, there's no truth to the rumor that wheels do not have tendencies. In fact, each wheel has certain numbers that are more likely to come up simply because of imperfections in the surface. I read a story about a family from Monte Carlo (the actual city, not the casino) who got banned from every casino there and in Vegas because they figured it out.

They would stand at the tables for hours every day (actually, they rotated between them) marking down which numbers they saw hit at which tables. They did this for a while (I forget how long) and figured out that certain numbers hit more often than others. When they were ready, they went in, bet on those same say seven numbers every time and raked in millions.

Most casinos had no idea how they were doing it, so they were simply banned, but one in Vegas eventually realized how they did it and, rather than banning them, they changed which wheels were at which tables. The family lost a lot of money that day, but had still profited millions by the time they were done.

What kills me in roulette is "that guy" who has a pile of chips and covers about 25 different numbers every time. He'll hit one with five units on it, get 175 units in return, then take darn near all of it and spread it out all over the layout again. Eventually he'll have 2-3 consecutive spins miss his action completely, and he's broke. Insane.

Re the Martingale: If the losing streak doesn't get you, the table limits will.

And if the table limits don't, the hookers will. I mean, uh, yeah ...
