Ron Borges retires from Boston Globe

Bill Simmons' ears just perked up -- "there's a vacancy at the Globe??"

 

Wonder how long it will take Simmons to mention this incident. Bill both likes boxing and loves the Pats, so I'm sure he has some genuine feelings one way or another about Ron.

Borges certainly knows his boxing. Don't always agree with his takes, but he does have an excellent grasp of the sport.

That said, the first things that come to my mind when Borges' name is mentioned are:

1. Ron was the ONE GUY to pick Holyfield over Tyson (by KO, I think
way back before Holyfield-Tyson I. Many boxing fans had heard of Borges
before that pick, but it really solidified his 'expert' status with the public at
large. He lived off of that fight for years and years. As someone who has
been close to the sport for years, this is always the first thing that comes
to my mind when his name comes up.

2. Borges got into a scuffle/fight/altercation with _____ ______ (can't
remember his name, sadly), who either was still working for the NY
Daily News or had fairly recently ceased working there. I think it
was at a boxing presser (the other guy is a boxing scribe, too), and the
other guy was supposedly in a neck brace and supposedly fairly
incapacitated, but they got into it. Apparently the two had had bad blood
between them for some time.

3. How much he disliked the Pats and Belidick. As someone who is not a fan
of Coach Billy, I loved Borges' stuff on the Pats and Hoodie.

Anybody who has followed/covered boxing for 10+ years will remember the Holyfield-Tyson I thing. Again, before that accurate prognostication Borges was often cited in informal press polls about the upcoming big fight du jour (i.e., "Media picks the winner of the fight" stuff). After that fight, Borges was a must-have for any national boxing discussion or roundtable.

Oh, and for the record, Borges also picked Michael Spinks to beat Tyson. He was not alone in that, but he was extremely wrong. It happens.
