Just because we're sportsjournalists.com: "You only cover us when you think we're dead."

Still "clinging to life" according to "sources."

As late-period Petty songs go, this one always got to me.

Wasn't there a regular poster here who used Tom Petty as their handle?

Tom Petty tries in vain to refute the news of his passing:

    A rather disagreeable chap, IIRC.

Very bombastic in the "race to be the most outraged" competition on the initial Sandusky thread.

I think either this or George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" was the first music video I ever saw on MTV. Was over a friend of a friend's house, just hanging out after dinner, and got to watch MTV -- pretty grown-up and forbidden fruit for a 6-year-old in 1982 or '83 -- and they came on in the same segment.
I remember thinking it was pretty goofy and weird, since I'd obviously never heard the song or much music of any kind, but the song and video always stuck with me.

According to this thread: Tom Petty: LAPD Apologizes For ‘Inconvenience’ Of Falsely Reporting Singer’s Death, LAPD had announced his death, which must have caused at least part of the stir. Mentioned in NY Daily News story, too.

RIP to the best thing, through the eyes of a Seminole, to ever come out of Gainesville.

And I loved the Traveling Wilburys.

Played Lucky just right on "King of the Hill," though I wasn't a huge fan of the character. (Geez, come to think of it, Brittany Murphy, voice of Luanne, died in 2009.)

Yes. He and Waylon Jennings probably the two greatest sj.com musicians.

I didn't recall anything about him other than the handle. So many have come and gone over the years.

Tom Petty's family issues a statement. He has passed away.
