He was also the original Jack Crawford in Manhunter, the first appearance of Hannibal Lecter (played by Brian Cox), Will Graham was played by William Petersen. It's kind of creepy going back to those scenes and thinking about what they're doing with the TV show Hannibal, they talk about the number Lecter did on Graham in the movie, the show does a good job of illustrating it.

I just saw one five minutes ago. It was strange. Do you just keep going with the commercials? What's the precedent there?

Farina got his first traction as an actor in the film "Thief," an underrated, hard-boiled James Caan crime tale filmed in Chicago and directed by Michael Mann, who later used Farina in "Manhunter," some "Miami Vice" episodes (Al Lombard character) and of course "Crime Story."

Farina had a small, thuggish role and looked to be about 30 pounds heavier. But his character was a mean SOB, so his cop days served him well. R.I.P.

Loved him in "Striking Distance," a favorite of the more absurd 90s Bruce Willis cop movies. And was I the only person in America who watched "Buddy Faro"? Apparently.

Loved Buddy Faro, but Farina not being able to launch F-bombs is like telling Nolan Ryan to only throw junk, Eddie Van Halen to use an acoustic guitar and Willie Nelson to get a haircut.

Good stuff. But I'm curious how Chicago laid claim to a beer brewed in La Crosse, Wis.

Hollywood actor and Chicago native Dennis Farina tipped his hat to the Second City posthumously today.

In lieu of flowers, anyone making a donation in honor of his death will be sending their money to the 100 Club of Chicago. The organization helps families financially after they have lost a loved one in the line of duty. These are families of firefighters, police officers among others.

Farina, a Chicago cop for 18 years before he began to act, cut two public service announcements for the 100 Club. His friend of 30 years, Joe Ahern, said Farina is a Chicagoan through and through.

“He never forget where he came from,” Ahern said.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy issued the following statement about Farina:

“The entire CPD family was saddened to hear of the passing of Dennis Farina, a legendary character actor who was a true-blue Chicago character. After an 18-year career in the Chicago Police Department, Dennis had a wonderful second act in life, bringing his distinctive Chicago voice and values to millions of people. No matter how far he got, Dennis never forgot where he came from, and while he was cherished by audiences around the world, he will always be first and foremost a guy from the Near North Side who helped make this city safer. We respect him for his service, we regard him for his talent, and we will remember him always.”
