AFL almost bit the dust eight seasons ago when they settled with the players union avoiding a complete season being cancelled. It was lucky it got as far as it did.

I don't think UFL (or USFL redux, if it gets off the ground) will be as lucky.

Once they ditched the Zubaz uniforms, that was the end of the line.

The Orlando Sentinal had a decent take on the demise of the AFL. It blames the players union, big-buck owners and the ESPN contract. It's on Real Clear Sports.

I was going to say there's a good story to be written on why the AFL tanked. I mean, to fail after a year or five is understandable. But someone really screwed up for something to perish after 22 years.

I remember there being a rumor a couple years ago that John Elway wanted to run out David Baker and take over the league. Haven't most of his auto dealerships struggled, as well?

If I recollect correctly, Elway sold the dealerships (licensing his name to the new owners) before the bottom fell out of the market-like back in 2005 or so.

I blame Bush for the league's demise.

It almost makes you think they hired Isiah Thomas as their commissioner.
