Rice-a-Roni Rant!

Why can't they put the rice and the vermicelli in separate packages?

You brown the rice-vermicelli mix in a pan to brown the vermicelli, but THEN you add water and the flavoring mix and simmer to cook the rice ... AFTER you've browned the vermicelli!

It effectively doubles the cooking time.

If I had time, I'd pick out all the individual grains of rice and do it separately. But I don't. And dammit, I'm hungry.

    End of Rice-a-Roni rant.

If you make risotto, first you saute the rice, then you add liquid to soften it. I think the saute is not for texture but for flavor; it brings out a nuttiness in the rice kernels. Probably the same idea with the Rice-a-Roni.

Ah, just make it from scratch. Dr. J make some killer spicy rice last night. I felt bad, because we were cooking for my best friend and I forgot she has bad acid refux.

Ted: So you're moving down to Miami?
Pat Healy: I accepted a job offer.
    Ted: With who?
    Pat Healy: With... uh... Rice-a-Roni.
Ted: Isn't that the San Francisco treat?
Pat Healy: It was. They're changing their image.

Ted: He never even looked her up down there! He was down there closing his deal with the Rice-a-Roni people the whole time!

I never get the Rice A Roni anymore. It takes too damn long to cook. Lately I've just been getting the Pasta Roni, which takes all of 10 minutes to cook.
