Tim Hetherington was killed, and a Getty photographer gravely wounded in Libya. Restrepo was nominated for an Oscar. He also made The Devil Came on Horseback.

The critically injured photog from Getty is Chris Hondros, an award-winning journalist in his own right. A really talented and good guy. And the odd thing: Back in the day, we worked at a small paper together. We had two photogs on that staff: Chris, and a bright young intern named Tyler Hicks -- the NYT shooter who was captured and abused before being released about a month back. When I heard about what happened to Tyler, the guy I reached out to (and who had lots of info before it ever was reported) was Hondros. Back then at that small paper, they were so young, but you could tell both of them were extremely talented and would go places. Prayers offered up for Chris and his family ...
  4. Chris died later Wednesday.

I met Tim a few weeks after he showed Restrepo at Sundance. An incredibly nice and interesting man. Godspeed to both.

As was said on the thread about Sri Lankan editor Lasantha Wickramatunga, it's an honor to be in the same profession as people like this, who risk their lives to tell the hard stories.

Sebastian Junger's sendoff to Tim Hetherington is worth a read.

Losing Hetherington and Hondros has been a terrible blow to the pj community. Such bravery, and such dedication being lost has diminished us all.
