Goodman is good. He got the break on Donovan going back to Florida, too.

"Taste it, Katz," Goodman said again Thursday.

  5. Indy Star has nothing, although they did acknowledge "Web reports" say he will be fired.

Don't doubt that report, but as a friend of mine (who keeps score of these things) noted, Goodman also said D.J. White definitely wouldn't play against Purdue.

Indiana University officials are spending the afternoon discussing basketball coach Kelvin Sampson's future, with a final decision still expected by Friday.
Late Thursday afternoon, school officials said Web news reports of Sampson's firing were premature, although acknowledged his dismissal is still a viable option.
Athletic director Rick Greenspan is expected to submit his recommendation to president Michael McRobbie on Friday. No timetable has been set for an announcement, said Larry MacIntyre, IU's director of university communications.
The NCAA accused IU of five major violations and said Sampson repeatedly lied to investigators about his role, prompting Greenspan's investigation.
Web accounts reported Sampson would not coach IU's game Saturday at Northwestern, and that IU administrators had met with assistant coach Dan Dakich about replacing Sampson on an interim basis.
"Somebody is making assumptions that are not based in fact at this point," MacIntyre said.

Of course they'd say that since the internal investigation period doesn't end until tomorrow. Why would they admit they'd fired him earlier than they were supposed to?

The national guys are so much harder to compete with in college basketball than college football. Kudos to them for being good at their jobs, but it's difficult for local papers to compete with them on some beats. Those coaches are attention whores and know how big a story gets when one of the big boys breaks it.

From the blog on the Bloomington Herald-Times site.

IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre said at 3:30 that reports that Sampson has been fired or has resigned are incorrect. He said both are possible scenarios for what will happen, but neither has happened at this point.
MacIntyre also said that IU has not scheduled a press conference for Friday afternoon. He said that staff is making preparations in case a press conference is held because it is a possibility, but no decision to have a press conference has been made.

UPDATE: IU trustee Pat Shoulders just told me that he’s aware of the Fox Sports Report, but he would put his hand on a Bible and swear that he doesn’t know anything about Sampson having been fired. Shoulders said he talked with university president Michael McRobbie at 11 a.m. today about a different matter and at that point there was no news on Sampson.

I guess we'll see how solid Goodman's sources are, won't we?

Goodman certainly swings for the fences. I know he's busted some stories, but I also know he's whiffed big-time on others.
