    I understand how that can happen on computers tracking visited sites and popping up ads based on clicks, but wow, that takes some real human error: complete inattentiveness, or deliberately screwing up, on some ones part.

    Not necessarily. I worked at three papers where the ads were not visible during the production process. At one paper, you could see slug names, but they weren't always obvious. This paper, above, was the Ottawa Citizen, by the way, which probably isn't a place where page designers have to pull in ads themselves. There was usually a fail-safe somewhere, for instance, we knew where the gun shop ad might be. But an ad for kitchen supplies probably isn't necessarily going to raise a red flag. Sometimes this stuff just happens.

    Hard to believe this ended just over 100 years ago, but women still haven’t had the right to vote in the US for a 100 years yet.
