    He was a local prep star when I was in junior high. UCLA recruited him, but had to stash him at a junior college, which was across the street from my junior high school. I went to a lot of those games.

    Wicks averaged about 35 points a game. Many years later when I got into the business and was covering this JC, I did a story on a guy who was about to break the school's career scoring record. The record was held by Wicks. Everybody else in the top 10 played there two years, Wicks only one.

    Walt Hazzard also had to be stashed at this JC for a year, but he didn't play basketball there.
