As an aside, the woman he beat and raped, lives in my city now.

She was given a national Jefferson Award last night for community service as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault. One tough woman, she is.

Even nine years later, as she talked about Maier, she sighed heavily and her eyes welled with tears. She said she thinks about him "on bright sunny days. His birthday. When I see his family. He's in my life all the time. I just want people to remember who he was."

I was in Lexington when this whole thing went down, living about three blocks from where a known relative of his lived. I lived in a very Hispanic-heavy portion of town. My mom was always so afraid. It was a crazy time.
