final update -- not that anyone besides me and the mrs. give a darn:

the parents who were going to be 2 hours late for my 50th will now be on time, because their kids lost wednesday or yesterday and won't play tonight. in typical kids' fashion, they got over the losses with pizza/pool parties. the nation is secure....
