There's a lot of games and a lot of teams between the Knicks and the Eastern Conference's seventh or eighth seed.

I'm guessing that Magic didn't do the math. Let's say 38-44 will get you the 8th seed in the East this year, which is two games worse than last year's 8th seed. To get to 38-44, the Knicks would have to go 24-13 from here on out. No fucking way.
