    Everyone says you can't live in NYC on $40K, which is total B.S. You can't live on CPW for $40K, but you can certainly get by on about $40-45K in four of the five boroughs. I did for the first few years I was here, and, no, I didn't live with mom.

    If by "get by" you mean a small fifth-floor walk-up studio. To me, that's not living. I couldn't find a 1-BR in an area that wouldn't put my life in danger for less than $1400 a month. Hard to pay that on 40K.

    Well, I'm on the first floor in a 1 BR that's two blocks from public transportation, in a safe neighborhood with parking nearby and pay less than $950 a month. Like I said, outside of Manhattan, it can be done. You just have to look.

    I looked for three months. But congrats...I looked basically everywhere BUT Manhattan...even Staten Island and Jersey.
