    History has to show that he was impeached. The first sentence of his obit must include this fact.

    If it ends up only being a symbolic gesture, as it ultimately was for Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, does it carry as much weight historically? Both remained in office after not being convicted by the Senate (though Johnson was literally one vote away from being shown the door).

    Well, if it wasn't for impeachment, you wouldn't remember Andrew Johnson at all. If Clinton hadn't been impeached, the evidence he was a horndog would've stuck with his reputation forever, so I guess evidence is mixed.

    I don't know. I think most people's immediate recollection of Andrew Johnson is as the guy who took over when Lincoln was assassinated. Impeachment would be a distant second for the general population.
